Story Synopsis: A Selfish prince is condemned to spend his life as a Beast while a thunderstorm rages outside his castle. When a widow woman far from her small farm and three adult children and two sons-in-law gets lost in a bewitched forest and chased into the Beast’s Castle, she is granted shelter, but does something to anger the Beast who insists she stay as his prisoner but at her pleading grants her one last visit home to say farewell. When her youngest daughter Beauty returns in her mother’s place, the Beast and those who live with him have hopes that love will break the spell. With dancing and sword fights, some comedy and suspense, Beauty and the Beast offers heartwarming fun for the whole family.

Story Synopsis:
Far off to the east, down the River Epoh, are the fabled Supine Mountains and the tranquil village of Honeybrrrt. Or so says the perplexing character of Uncle Wilby in the drama-comedy The Other Noise by local playwright Martin Smith. Thirteen-year-old Sedgwick has been dragged by her mother Joan to visit her aunt and uncle, only to discover she will be saddled with watching over her peculiar uncle for an entire day. Starring Mikayela Piet as Sedgwick and Bruce Farley as Uncle Wilby, The Other Noise is a fantastical fable filled with rich characters and poetic dialogue that takes an audience into deep places of emotion. Whether it is side-splitting humour or the wistful discovery of hope, The Other Noise is both a fantasy and a reflection of the feelings we all share. A Comedic Quest to a place of Hope.

Sandra On Scene: Nana’s Naughty Knickers

Paris Performers’ Theatre is having a little sexy fun this time around with Paris Performers’ presents:Nana’s Naughty Knickers written by Katherine DiSavino at the Paris Fair Grounds.

This is a first time directing effort for Darlene Murphy who says, “I’m a little rattled,” but adds, “I couldn’t have had a better more experienced cast.”

The cast includes Susan Dignan as the Nana Silvia Charles, Catherine Camp Paynter as her friend Vera Walter, Victoria Hudson Muir as Bridget the frazzled law student granddaughter, Jamie McKenzie as the cop Tom O’Grady who has eyes for Bridget, Rose Huysentruyt-Closs as Heather Van Pree a “businesswoman”, Stuart Chambers as the unlikable landlord Gil Schmidt, Lynn McNeily as Claire Schmidt and Sean McAndrew and Joost Nijland as delivery guys. Linda Lloyd-McKenzie as understudy for Camp Paynter plays Vera for the first Saturday performance only, which is a dinner theatre.

Bridget and her grandmother are about to become roommates. However, what Bridget sees as a unique opportunity to stay with her favourite Nana in New York for the summer, quickly turns into an experience she will never forget. It seems sweet nana is running an illegal boutique from her apartment, selling hand-made naughty knickers and lingerie to every senior citizen in the five borough area! Will Bridget be able to handle all the excitement? Will her Nana get arrested? Or worse…evicted?

“When I decided to try my hand at directing, I wanted something hilariously funny,” says Murphy. “Nana’s naughty Knickers filled the order.”

She says her directing debut has been “a learning experience” and she is grateful for the help of George Fowlie who was her mentor through the process. Fowlie, a retired teacher, has been directing community theatre since 1974.

Probably the most challenging aspect of this show is the set elements full of secret closets and sliding doors and wardrobes.

Stage Manager Terri Lynn Graham says, “The hidden closet was the hardest part as the scrim was put together in two pieces and it’s huge.” Graham adds, “We had to also enclose all the hidden elements from backstage so that the audience couldn’t see the crew operating the set pieces. Thankfully we have some very smart people on our crew to figure out the logistics of the mechanical parts.”

Paris Performers builds their stage from scratch for every show. It takes about a week to construct.

“The effort I would say is the same going into each set,” says Graham. “We have a plan from the director and our two main set builders, John Creeden and Tyler Graham work on the logistics of what we want and let us know what’s feasible and what’s not. They’re pretty awesome though and can construct anything.”

Some of the props for Nana’s Naughty Knickers are rather risqué. “For this particular show I shopped at the Love Shop,” says Graham. “We had a great time going through the discount bins for just the right pieces to make you squirm a little in your seat and give you a good laugh.”

Graham adds, “I would say the concept of the show itself is not really risqué however the content of the boxes are a little eye catching,” she laughs. “Nana is a little more demure, but Heather’s store is well… more like the love shop.” Murphy says she is expecting mixed reactions from audiences about what they see onstage, but is feeling good about it.

Graham is confident, “Honestly, our audience is very loyal and as soon as they heard “Naughty Knickers” the ticket sales started coming in.” She adds, “It’s a great laugh and with a few well placed negligees and naughtier pieces we’re sure the audience is going to have a great time.”

Opening night will be adjudicated for the Western Ontario Drama League (WODL) for which Paris Performers often place well.

The show opens February 19, 2016 at 8 P.M. and runs Feb 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28 with Sunday shows at 2 P.M.

9th Annual Kids Can Fly Storybook Breakfast

The Kid’s Can Fly Storybook Breakfast held on February 6, 2016, at the New Covenant Christian Fellowship was its usual sold out success. The 300 people over two breakfast settings were shown to their tables by storybook characters who could have been a fairytale princess, a comic book Thor or Spiderman, Alice in Wonderland, Robin Hood and many more.

Several of the children and their families showed up in costumes as well. They were all given their own Official Autograph book and in it featured Ads from all the sponsors of the event. Special photo sittings where taken with Spiderman, Jake the Pirate, Olaf, Cinderella, Llama Llama and Toopy by volunteers and sent to each family.

The Sherwood Restaurant Brantford catered the breakfast of pancakes, sausages, and lots of fresh fruit. And each table was adorned with its own unique centerpiece featuring a popular storybook.

All the volunteers – from the servers to the characters – have been returning year after year to support this event. Margot Kneale, a retired teacher who has been volunteering at the breakfast for several years says, “You can automatically tell the kids who have been read to at a very early age.” Another volunteer, Colleen Vandaele, ended up being part of the breakfast because her daughters got involved in representing some of the storybook characters, so she just “stayed and helped”. “It’s our way of giving back,” she says.

Organizer and Executive Director of Kids Can Fly & Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Brantford/Brant, Sharon Brooks, said the Storybook Breakfast is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library which is a monthly book gifting program for children ages 0-5. The event has continued to grow in its 9 years and changed to larger venues several times. She says it won’t get larger than 300 tickets. Of Kids Can Fly she says, “It’s all about supporting the growing child as much as you can from the get go.” Brooks adds, “It showcases the importance and joy of families reading with their kids.” She says the aim is to be true to literature during the event and even though some of the stories have become movies, “It had to have been a book first” to be featured at the breakfast. She says she has noticed a big change in technology since she started the Storybook Breakfast, so the goal is to promote “putting down the ipod and picking up a book.”

Throughout the morning, children had the opportunity to get autographs from their favourite characters and have photos taken with them. Children’s music played over the sound system throughout the morning while Brooks announced various happenings from the stage. At the end, all the characters paraded out and lined up to say goodbye to the children. Each child received a bag with a book to take home. All those involved are anxiously looking forward to next year’s Kids Can Fly Storybook Breakfast.

Kids Can Fly is a charity unique to Brant with a mandate to support positive nurturing in early childhood. Programs it provides are Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, The Launch Pad, Parachute Program, Roots of Empathy, Mothers In Mind and the ECE Awards. Trio Jazz & Friends

It was an intimate setting in the lobby of the Sanderson Centreon Thursday, February 11th.

Sweet, saucy, sexy and soulful jazz was performed for a standing-room only crowd. The event came just in time for Valentine’s Day as romantics from around the area came to hear the wonderful sounds.

The talented Trio Jazz Band, and numerous local guest artists, lay down the beats in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

D&D United Martial Arts – 2016 ICOMA World Championships

D&D United Martial Arts had eight competitors return from the 2016 ICOMA World Championships in Mexico. Bringing with them a total of 24 medals (eight gold, eight silver, & eight bronze) and two Triple Crown winners (three golds).

The awards were as follows:

Sensei Bryon Davis – three gold (weapons, forms, sparring) & one bronze (open) Triple Crown
Sempai Kelsey Cooper – one gold (forms), three silver (sparring, synchronized, open) & one bronze (weapons)
Linda Davis – one silver (weapons)
Sabrina Beecraft – two bronze (weapons, sparring)
Piper Force – three gold (weapons, sparring, chanbara) & one silver (forms) Triple Crown
Cole VonLukawiecki – one gold (forms), two silver (sparring, chanbara), & one bronze (weapons)
Lisa Brown – two bronze (weapons & forms)
Sydney Brown – one silver (weapons), & one bronze (forms)

Dave Levac visited D & D Martial Arts and awarded scrolls to the returning participants.

Gord Bamford at the Sanderson Centre

Gord Bamford at the Sanderson Centre

The auditorium of the Sanderson Centre was full of applause and shouts asGord Bamford took the stage on January 24th. The show was a huge success as the entire theatre was sold out weeks in advance.

Young artist, Jesse Mast, kicked off the show with his renditions of some country favourites as well as some original songs. Jesse stole the hearts away of many audience members with his singing and guitar playing.

Excitement filled the air during the intermission. Then everyone sprang into cheers and applause when Gord walked out on stage. As the excitement peaked, Gord had people breaking out in song, and dancing in the isles. Everyone had a great time listening to some fun favourites and excited new songs as well.

Gord Bamford was one of the best performers I’ve seen. He engaged the crowd and included many songs that were personal to him. One of the best parts of the night was when he brought up a 6 year old boy named Aaron to the stage as he sang “Little Guy.”
