Sandra On Scene: Tuesday’s With Morrie Teaser
Ichthys Theatre‘s second play of its 2016 season, TUESDAY’S WITH MORRIE, incidentally does not play on a Tuesday. Mitch Albom’s TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE, stage adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher, comes to the Gord Paynter Theatre June 3-5 and June 10-12, 2016, Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 and Sunday matinees at 2 pm.
Sit in on Mitch’s conversations with Morrie, his newly retired college professor, as they share the struggle of the journey living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Morrie shares his joys and love of life, savouring the last opportunity to truly mentor one of his favourite students.
ICHTHYS Theatre with Director Kate Elwood have taken on this captivating autobiographic story to bring attention and understanding to the public and healing to people who have been touched by ALS.
Morrie Schwartz, a retired professor with ALS is played expertly by Jim Hooper, and Mitch Albom, his former student is played by Malakai Darien Fox.
Fox recently finished a run of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Rose Theatre in Brampton, while Hooper has come out of retirement to take on a role that he calls “too challenging to pass up.”
Director Kate Elwood says, “We know that this show will inspire smiles and tears and we suggest you bring a kleenex.”
The set is very simple with a black curtain backdrop and some furniture pieces.
Although the script only calls for the two men and only mentions the nurse, Elwood decided to actually bring on silently performing her duties, played by Alissa Cooper. Cooper also doubles as the Assistant Director.
