Behind the Scene: Brantford Carnival

Invoking childhood memories, the carnival is in town. Filling the air with the scents of cotton candy and caramel apples. Bringing the lights, the sounds, and the screams of glee. Even though it was drizzling on and off, a few still came out to try their luck to win a stuffed creature and to take a turn on the Tilt-a-Whirl.

The carnival is run by Campbell Amusements and is set up at the Brantford Civic Centre.

Make sure to Be Seen having some fun on the rides all the way through May 8th!

BScene by Dean: Exit 36 Food Trucks at Evangel Church

If you like the idea of getting your food out of a truck in a parking lot, this is the place to be. Evangel Church runs this show every Thursday evening from 5 to 8pm. They did it last year and it turned into a great place to go eat for most of last summer.

It was so popular last year that they’re doing it again for this year. I was there to eat and what I had was excellent and I know I’ll be heading back a few times this season.

Thursday, May 5th was their opening night and as you can see, there was a lot of return business from last year. One couple I spoke with told me that this is what they do to start their weekend every week (they both work Sunday to Thursday) and then they move on from here and do what needs to be done.

As I was leaving, there was an extended family there to celebrate a family birthday and this is what the celebrator wanted to do so they did complete with birthday cupcakes brought from home.

Even though tonight was cold and blustery and even threatening rain for a while, there were people lined up at all the trucks the whole time I was on site. I would guesstimate that at the time I left there were probably close to two hundred people either in line to get food or sitting and standing around eating it, with more coming every minute.

For something different for supper on a Thursday night check this place out, you might be surprised at what you can get here. I was.

Behind the Scene: The Power of the Purse – Empowering Women to Wealth

The “Power of the Purse” event, presented on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, was a fantastic way to inspire women to have financial stability to be successful throughout the course of their lives. The event was beautifully hosted at the Brantford Golf & Country Club for the second time in row and quickly sold out. In addition to empowering women to wealth, the event is in support of Brantford’s Nova Vita organization. They aid women, children and men who have suffered from domestic abuse by providing them with clothing, shelter, food and emotional and financial support. All proceeds from the event’s silent auction and ten dollars from each ticket sold were donated to Nova Vita; to ensure the amazing organization can continue to be successful in helping people recover from their heart breaking misfortunes. Anne Ruddell, a representative for Nova Vita, spoke about the importance of the organization with a high degree of compassion. The Power of the Purse attracted many ladies to help show their support for Nova Vita while learning valuable life skills about dealing with money.

In comparison to the first “Power of the Purse” event last year, this event was more interactive with plenty of room for discussion and brainstorming among the presenters and the audience. Shannon McMannis: Certified Financial Planner forCornerstone Capital Financial Groupi, was the host of “The Power of the Purse”. Her vision is to shine a light on the astounding efforts Nova Vita contributes to the people in our community, and to help women feel confident and knowledgeable with their finances. She confidently stated that, “Women should be educated because the more you know, the better!” Shannon has a clear passion for helping women to become financially successful in life.

The evening was organized so thoughtfully and elegantly. The women were all very excited to be a part of the event. Anne Manson: Vice President, Cl Investments Inc. along with Rebecca Moore: Consultant and Researcher, presented the interactive workshop, “Women and Money.” The workshop had five steps to financial success; 1. Be prepared, 2. Gather as much valuable information as possible, 3. Have those difficult conversations about finances with loved ones, 4. Seek professional advice, and 5. Focus on your well-being. The presentation was extremely thorough in addressing the importance of having financial stability as women. In the past women were not typically the “breadwinners” of the household, but of course that has changed so women must know how to properly handle their wealth. Anne Manson explained that together, your inherited family values towards money, your money personality, and your acquired knowledge about money determines your financial behaviour. This event spoke to women in the pre-retirement and retirement stages of their lives, as it can be a challenging transition for many people in terms of dealing with wealth. Anne and Rebecca allowed the women in the audience to share their stories and ideas which was a refreshing take on the presentation. The women were left feeling empowered about the next steps they should take to lead to wealth in the future.

This event was made possible by the amazing women listed above along with many generous sponsors from our community. It was an informative evening that sparked new ideas about how to live a financially successful life and how to give back to the community. The “Power of the Purse” event was well received by the women who attended. It was a realistic and inspiring perspective towards women and finances today.

“Breakfast for Champions” raises $12,365

Brant Food For Thought and Title Sponsor, Investors Group, hosted the 7th Annual “Breakfast For Champions” charity breakfast gala in support of local student nutrition programs and program support activities. The event was held Tuesday May 3rd, 2016 at New Covenant Christian Fellowship, from 6:45 am to 9:00 am and featured a fabulous breakfast buffet sponsored by local food procurers, high school Culinary Arts students, chefs, and restaurants. The keynote speaker was Chef Tracy Winkworth, from Liaison Culinary College who shared her passion for educating youth about healthy food choices.

The goal of the event is to raise resources and awareness of student nutrition programs in our community and the volunteers Brant Food for Thought supports. They rely on community-minded businesses and individuals to help close to 10,000 children and youth in schools in our community. They provide nearly 1.2 million nutritious snacks and meals during the school year.

Food sponsors served up a sumptuous fare of hot and cold breakfast items, served by the Culinary Arts Students of St. John’s College (Brantford) and Assumption College School (Brantford). Items included: hot whole grain waffles, fresh berries and fruit creations, sponsored by Dave’s NoFrills, wholesome muffins and breakfast bars, yogurt and berry parfaits, Prestige Western Omelettes from Burnbrae Farms, and breakfast ham from Strodes BBQ & Deli / Strodes Express. Hot oatmeal, juices and lots of fresh coffee and tea complete the market-style breakfast buffet.

Guests had the pleasure of participating in a silent auction with creative baskets courtesy of local schools and businesses, and a live auction with auctioneer teams from Adesa Kitchener and Adesa Brampton. Featured live auction items included: Via Rail Canada trip for (4) to Québec City, Grand Experiences Adventure Outfitter Group and Family Trips, Golf North package for (4) with cart, Smakdab! Pottery & Pizza Experience, and Grand River Dinner Cruise For Two.

Since 1998, Brant Food For Thought has been supporting and facilitating student nutrition programs in elementary and secondary schools in Brantford, Brant and Six Nations of the Grand, with funding resources for food, nutrition education resources, fundraising opportunities and public awareness.

Behind the Scene – Chalk

BScene photographer Belinda was invited behind the scene for the final dress rehearsal of “Chalk”. A sold out show at theBrant Artillery Gunner’s Club Unit 21 with proceeds going to gift two cancer care patients an all inclusive getaway to Niagara Falls. Over 22 volunteers and cast are a part of production.

The show will take to the stage, May 29th, 3pm at the Gunners Club and will be MC’d by Melanie Crawford. Chalk tells the story on how The Closet Door became a local-loved in-style thrift store.

12th Annual Hike for Hospice

12th Annual Hike for Hospice

It was a little damp and chilly but spirits were high as the 12th Annual Hike for Hospice officially kicked off on Sunday, May 1st. The Mayor, MP, and MPP were all in attendance to start the festivities which included the walk, bouncy castle, music, face painting and food.

There were over 1000 people in the crowd with 42 teams participating in the event. Congratulations to everyone involved for doing an amazing job, helping to raise a total of $281,094 for the Stedman Community Hospice!
