LOL Open Mic at the Starving Artist Gallery Cafe

Tonight Brantford residents enjoyed spectacular performances from comedians as far away as Toronto and London. Even though the roads were covered in snow and slippery, many people were drawn to the comedy show this evening. Ed House hosts his LOL Open Mic comedy show every other Wednesday and it’s a fun, (mostly clean) event. Ed’s mother was in attendance tonight and this made for some interesting interactions LOL He grew up in Parry Sound and has a very ‘family friendly’ demeanor. He’s laid back, engaging and has amusing new stories about his new born baby girl.

We started off with a bang with Big Bopper Bob. He came back to town tonight and gave us some really funny impressions from a well known kids TV show. Although he resides in London, Bob feels at home in Brantford because the crowds are welcoming, and he’s made plenty of friends in town. He’s always a favourite to watch and he’s full of coffee energy.

Next on the stage, was Doug Koning with his ‘baby face’ and wonderfully well put together jokes about his unique experiences in life. Doug’s comedy tonight circled around his appearance, amongst other things, and the crowd enjoyed his talent immensely.

Dave Getachew had a blast on stage with us tonight. He offers opinionated comedy, current event jokes and random bantering to keep us continually laughing. He came from London to entertain us in and he most certainly did!

Gregg Robb was responsible for playing music as each comedian approaches the stage. He did a very good job picking funny and appropriate songs and he chose a Led Zeppelin tune to introduce himself. Always a favourite. He is known as “Clutch” and he shared how his nickname began; it’s not what you think! LOL He roamed around on stage telling us funny stories that perfectly matched his many facial expressions.

Next up was Michelle (insert complicated last name here – Zhitomirsky) and she’s as cute as a button! Only sixteen years old with hilarious new and refreshing spins about pregnancy. Her timing and delivery on stage is impressive and she’s only been doing stand-up comedy for the past seven months. If you get the chance to see her, I whole hardheartedly believe you’ll be very pleased.

Phil Cal, also totally adorable and from London, worked that stage like he owned it. He’s very interactive with his audience which really brought the laughter to another level. He captured everyone with tales of being a father, and his ideas about dating.

The headliner was Roy Daye. He killed. Slayed the crowd all night. A must see comedian. He performed in Brantford two weeks ago, and popular demand brought him back tonight. Roy is an incredible performer and he talked about how there’s no better job than being a comedian. His ideas surrounding this topic are amazingly hilarious. Such a pleasure to see him again and he drove all the way from Toronto so we could laugh our heads off. Excellent.

There’s always new faces in the crowd coming to see the shows, and as more people attend the energy of the room expands which I think makes us come together as a community. After the show a friend of mine said to me “It’s so wonderful to sit back and relax here. I don’t have to worry about being offended”. Showtime is 9pm and thank you very much to all who were in attendance this evening. The roads were slippery, but we’ve got some hard-core comedy fans in Brantford! LOL
