LOL – Luvern on Laughs – LOL Comedy Night at Starving Artist Gallery Cafe

If you were at this show tonight, you know how much fun it was! If not, come check it out February 10th. Free comedy just for you. Ed House hosts this bi-weekly comedy show and he returned from a 3 month absence. Without missing a beat, he worked the crowd with tales of his life sharing almost 100% clean content. So glad to have him back hosting.

Beware, there’s always one heckler in the audience, but this made for some crazy fun entertainment. Collectively he was called “pajama pants” and this heckler made the night especially entertaining for all.

Here are a few shots from tonights adventure, but the full show pictures are available at Back Of The Room Photography, as well as my website www.backoftheroom.ca I hang out in the back of the room taking pictures throughout the night and I caught some special moments.

Our first comedian to be introduced was Mickie Krish. He went up on stage sharing how nervous he was. True or not, this TOTALLY worked for him! He was all tense, and anxious… I thought his set was fabulous. What a great way to start off the show.

Oh…Jordan Hoath, he always impresses me. He’s got this ‘attitude’ on stage…kinda hateful, kinda loving… but the best part of his act tonight was the completely odd and strange segways he made LOL Hilarious….

Melanie Crawford, so comfy on her own stage, reminded us of motherhood in her own sadistic way LOL Along with odds and ends about relationships, children, and sex. All interactive and engaging humour. She wasn’t in the list of comedians tonight, but there’s a lotto spot which is open to any comedian who would like to perform.

James McVicar cruised onto the stage and gave the crowd his best material considering he was heckled quite a bit from ‘pajama pants’. He ended his set with an incredible joke and I do believe an applause break. Yay!

Erinn White runs her own comedy show in Guelph and I think it’s called “Every 28 days”. I didn’t remember all the details, so please contact her on FaceBook if you have any questions. Tonight, she ruled that stage. Catching the attention of everyone in the room with her interactive ways and excellent humour. Can’t wait to see her again!

Roy Daye is someone that we all want to return to The Starving Artist. Man did he ever kill! If you see his name on a comedy show, make sure you check him out.

Your headliner tonight was Black Zeus. Wow….crowd work, dealing with ‘pajama pants’ and thrilling the audience with his style and ease on stage. I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes LOL All eyes and ears were happily focused on Black Zeus anticipating the next laugh, and there were many.

It’s a great show to attend and lots of new people came to the show tonight. We got started around 9:15pm (a bit late) and ended at 11:00pm. The energy of the room during the show was positively uplifting. Once Ed closed the show, it became social hour inside the restaurant with comedians being congratulated on a job well done by their new fans. Awesome. See you in two weeks at the Starving Artist.

This is an extremely talented pair of singer/songwriters, among the best that I know and well worth the time to watch perform. This is the first time I’ve seen them perform in the same ‘show’ and I wondered out loud if they would ever actually perform together. I got the impression that the question had never been brought up before, but they did seem to like the idea. Perhaps a duet performance might be in the not too distant future for some lucky people in Brantford. I would definitely be watching for it.

Bring “That Canadian Guy” Glen Foster” to Brantford

We know ‘That Canadian Guy’ as a professional comedian because we’ve seen him on TV over the past 20 years. Occasionally the Comedy Network re-runs his one hour Comedy Now specials due to excellence and popularity. He sounds a little like George Carlin, looks like the real deal of a Canadian man, and moves with unpredictability on stage. Yes, I’m writing about the hilarious, intelligent and skillful comedian Glen Foster, a.k.a. ‘That Canadian Guy’. We haven’t seen Glen perform in Brantford yet and I hope this article brings him to town.

Television performances include: Just for Laughs – 8 appearances and counting, Comedy Now! with two one hour specials (2000 and 2010), approximately ten appearances on CBC’s The Debaters, and appearances on CBC’s Comics TV. His talent has taken him to Australia, Great Britain, all over the USA, and Canada as well. For your continued enjoyment, there are three available DVD’s: 1995’s Overworked and Underlaid; 2004’s That Canadian Guy; and 2012’s PRICKLY. There’s an upcoming show! If you’re looking to impress someone for Valentines day, Glen is performing Sunday February 14th at the Blackbull Neighbourhood Pub, located at 1124 Guelph Line in Burlington. Focusing his material to be widely accessible, less serious, and personal to every audience, his delivery is captivating with any subject. Glen’s ready to provide you with new clever wisecracks, and abstract creations, while gradually moving away from political comedy. Glen’s jokes get deep into your psyche, as he taps into your memories. He creates a whole new whimsical picture in your mind, which is where your uncontrollable laughter kicks in. It’s not just playful and comical, it’s absolutely entertaining. When asked why he chose to be a comedian, his cheeky response was “I could meet girls, and I couldn’t play the guitar.”. LOL

I learned that professional comedians have an on-stage and off-stage persona. Off stage, Glen is a gentle, patient, soft spoken, helpful kind man. On stage, he’s a totally different character full of energy. He changes into this emotional, captivating creature through his body language, his voice pulls your attention towards him, and his eyes sparkle with delight with your irresistible laughter. He’s artistically confrontational as he guides you through his structured maze of comedy. That Canadian guy is entirely amazing.

Now, how did he get that nickname? It’s catchy, unique and I was curious. Glen happily shared his story. During his travels as a comedian in Great Britain in 1998, Glen would hear people talking about him after his show. They would say “That Canadian guy, he was funny!”, probably because they forgot his real name. Glen, the savvy self promoter, saw the opportunity to brand himself and almost 30 years later, ‘That Canadian Guy’ is one of comedy’s household names.

Glen is 50ish, was born a libra, and is a stand-up comedian that’s been working comedy stages since he was a teenager. As a youngster he joined a Junior Achievement Program that taught skills training, helping to improve his public speaking skills. He quickly learned he was more comfortable when he included jokes, in conjunction with his written material. He is self-taught, with the foundation of a loving supportive home. Growing up, his family enjoyed watching comedy shows and Glen was naturally talented at making people laugh. His first time on a stage to perform his comedy, was in 1976 at a high school variety show. He strolled down memory lane a moment and he told me the audience absolutely loved his performance. I don’t think he realized what his future would bring, but, an iconic Canadian comic was born on that stage. He was only sixteen years old. Now, married to his common-law wife with a teenage daughter of his own, Glen lives in Southern Ontario and his worldwide career has been truly outstanding.

Mr. Foster previously worked in advertising and marketing. An excellent background for self promotion, which he does extremely well today. For one hour a week, mentors meet with their mentee and engage in activities such as board games, crafts or just hang out in the playground.

Behind the Scene: Brantford Community Symphony Orchestra

Harmonious tones echoed throughout the auditorium of theNew Covenant Christian Fellowship, as eager music fans hummed along to the musical sounds of the Brantford Community Symphony Orchestra. A free show, with a suggested donation intended to support the art of music, saw over 100 people visit and enjoy the performance. The orchestra was well timed and rehearsed, under the guidance of seasoned conductor Deb McLoughlin. Each set was met with an enthusiastic ovation from attendees, and many could be seen being hit with waves of emotions as each performance crescendoed. We were treated to modern arrangements as well as classics such as ‘Toccata’ byGirolamo Frescobaldi, ‘Emperor Waltz’ by Johann Strauss Jr, and the show concluded with an invigorating and uplifting performance of “La Vie Parisienne Overture” by Jacques Offenbach. The latter of which was dedicated to the peoples of France, as tribute to their strength during recent hardships.

It was sincerely a pleasure to hear the orchestra play. Their next performance will be at New Covenant Church, located on Holiday Drive, on Sunday, May 29th at 7:30 p.m. for the 4th Annual Spring Concert. Make sure to Be Seen in attendance, supporting local music.

Behind the Scene: Woody’s Bar-B-Q comes to Brantford

The smoker will be smoking all sorts of fine meats, from now on, at the new Woody’s Bar-B-Q Canada location at 68 King George Road. Well known throughout the southern United States, and spreading across Canada, they specialize in an authentic barbecue experience. Each item on the menu has its own unique and exciting twist and the servers are eager to tell you all about it. The portions are huge and as we we’re told, “No one leaves Woody’s hungry.” Owner Mike Bell, recently moved to our community and has always wanted to open his own restaurant. He found that Brantford needed a barbeque place that would offer the most authentic experience possible. The decor inside and out, along with the ‘southern charm’ of the servers, only enhances the allure of the food prepared by talented and well-trained kitchen staff.

Woody’s Bar-B-Q is celebrating its Grand Opening tomorrow (January 25th) at 11 a.m. and will close when the last person leaves. As a matter of fact, that’s their operating policy. Each day, 7 days a week, they will open at 11 a.m. and will close when the last customers leaves. The venue can seat nearly 88 people and currently has 16 staff. They already have plans for an expansion with a patio and drive-in and will offer eat-in, take-out, and delivery. If you’re hungry and you’d love to try something new, make sure to Be Seen at Woody’s Bar-B-Q.

Behind the Scene: Gord Bamford Interview

The stage of the Sanderson Centre was cluttered with instruments and band equipment as everyone got set up for tonight’s performance. Jason and Dean had a chance to go Behind the Scene and chat with Gord Bamford before his Brantford show.

Gord has made it through Ontario on many occasions, and has stopped in many places along the way. Gord remembered having been here years ago when he was first getting started, and commented that “it’s kinda cool to be here.” As a young kid growing up in Alberta, he was a huge Oilers fan, and he was excited to be back in the hometown of the Great One. Unfortunately, Gord and his team doesn’t get a lot of time to stay much of the many cities he visits; otherwise he might have gone to see the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre and the Sports Hall of Fame.

After chatting about our grand city, I mentioned that we had quite a few local musicians in the area. So I asked him to share some memories and inspirations about how he got involved with music. When he first started out it was just for fun. He told me about when he was a kid, singing in school and other music festivals. “To be honest with you, I never thought I would be sitting here chatting with you, never thought I would get this far.”

“When you get the opportunity to get out there, you have to make it happen. You only get one chance. Anyone who wants to pursue their goals and dreams, whether it be music or anything else in life, the most important thing is if you really think you can get there. You probably can. You just gotta work hard.”

Next, I asked him about his favourite songs. He likes the songs for and about his children: “Little Guy,” “My Father’s Daughter,” and a new one called “Apple.” Otherwise, he said he was a huge Merle Haggard fan and enjoys his song “That’s the Way Love Goes.”

Finally, I wanted to know a bit more about his Foundation and how he helps out communities across Canada. Having started the foundation nine years ago, they have been able to raise over 2.5 million dollars. “Giving back to the communities is a great thing. We’ve done lots of work with Ronald McDonald Houses and children’s hospitals. A lot of what we support is things I have a personal experience with such as, Big Brothers Big Sisters or children’s related charities.

It was great to get to know more about Gord and how community minded he his. Stay tuned as we post more photos from the concert tonight.

Behind the Scene: Wine, Women, and Wealth.

A group of nearly 140 women from all walks of life filled the ballroom at the Brantford Golf & Country Club for Wine, Women, and Wealth. This inaugural event collected money and clothing donations for Support Nova Vita, and provided guests with an opportunity to socialize and learn about wealth management and acquisition.

The evening featured speeches from: Shannon McMannis, Katrina Wilson, Deborah Ditchfield, and Tanya Stephens. The event was sponsored by: Cornerstone Capital Financial Group, FundEx Investment INC, Waterous, Holden, Amey, Hitchon Lawyers LLP, Fidelity Investments, and Boddy Ryerson LLP. The night was RSVP only, it was a huge success, with tickets selling out fast and more seating and tickets needing to be added. Tickets were $20, $10 from which was given as a donation to Nova Vita. Guests received a complimentary glass of wine, appetizers, and valuable insight from each speaker.

Due to the success of the event, more events of this nature are expected to be held later this year; each with a different theme. Make sure to Be Seen in attendance at the next Wine, Women, and Wealth; and stay tuned for more information on upcoming events.

Luvern On Laughs: Trailer Park Boys

If you know them and love them, no intro required – The Trailer Park Boys were in town.

Tonight’s comedy show was a HUGE HIT at NV Night Club! The crowd roared and the sound was close to deafening. A few hundred “hillbillies” joined together for a night of down right hilarious stupidity. LOL Brantford sure does know how to make a comedy show rock. Hosted by Wally Warwick.

First up Melanie Crawford! She’s completely amazing….you’ll see more of her comedy pretty much anywhere you go. Yes, her parents were AT the show for real…I said hello to them earlier! Melanie stood up on that stage like a pro. No nonsense, interactive, wicked quick wit and the crowd responded with cheers, laughter and applause. Brave woman she is! Very proud of her.

Jason Allen woo hoo!! He was a perfect fit for tonight’s redneck theme…flannel, long messy hair, and completely mesmerizing on stage. His one liners were hugely successful. Cheers, applause breaks, and I heard people repeating his jokes because they were just SO funny! LOL

Wally Warwick introduced himself as the final act before the headliner, which was an interesting twist and it worked for him. Wally’s style of comedy is loud and in your face. As I looked around the audience, I could see people staring at him on stage. They had silly little grins permanently stuck on their faces, that was cool. I guess that was partially because Wally excited the crowd with some free stuff. Lots of people left with items from Wally’s home that he no longer needed. LOL

Then there was a 10 minute break after Wally’s set. Everyone was FULL of anticipation waiting for the main act. Randy took the stage, Mr. Lahey followed and the night was completely nuts, and I mean COMPLETELY! They threw things into the audience, accepted money, shared alcohol with the audience, picked a couple of willing volunteers to assist them, and gave an excellent performance the whole night. The Trailer Park Boys are not for faint of heart, but damn did they ever entertain us!!
